24 - THE HIGH COST OF VICTORY

The moment the magic aura of the hearthstone amulet touched the edge of the pile, the wave of mana being drawn into the front of the mound snapped off, and the entire thing started to shake. Time to rock and roll, I guess!

That seemed like my que to charge, so I cast a low-powered mana push that launched me up and over the top in a single bound. I twisted in midair and did a nifty little half flip that brought me down on the other side, facing back the way I’d jumped from.

What the. . . ? I just stood and stared for a moment, unable to move, as my mind tried to process what my eyes were seeing. I realized with alarm that the malingarra wasn’t hiding inside the massive mound of debris, it was the pile of goo-covered rocks and trees!

The cursed monstrosity raised its body up on a mass of thick tentacles that flowed from its underbelly. There were dozens of the slimy appendages, all connected to the underside of the creature. The mass of cords seemed to function as both its arms and its legs. Each one was as thick around the middle as Grom’s beefy thigh and completely coated with the same thick green goo that oozed from the cracks in its shell.

Once it started moving, the ugly bastard vaguely resembled a wide, mutated centipede with tentacles instead of legs. In the center of the uppermost group of undulating tentacles was a wider, stationary, stalk-like neck. I couldn’t really tell what part of its face was what until it hissed at me with a three-lipped mouth that spread open like some kind of carnivorous flower.

My enhanced ears heard a gurgling sound that seemed to be coming from inside the belly of the beast. I managed to throw up a mana shield just before it hawked a huge, neon green loogie my way. The toxic goo splattered against the glowing barrier and started to ooze down slowly. I released the spell, and a puddle of gunk fell down with a splash in the mucky water. My hard leather breeches sizzled wherever the drops of nasty green goop made contact.

“Watch out, I think it spits some kind of acid shit!”

“Did you say acid shit?” Memphis yelled back in disbelief. “What in the ‘Sam Hill’ are you talking about?”

I shook my head as I summoned Ascalon to my hand and sliced off the tip of a nearby tentacle with ease. More green goo poured from the wound and the monster reared back angrily. “Not acid SHIT, just acid. . . Nevermind what it is, just don’t let the fucking thing spit on you! Ok?”

I stepped back a couple of feet and sent a rapid trio of mana bolts directly at its face. The creature snapped the shots up like candy treats and continued to rise the rest of the way off the ground. Its now visible life bar pulsed back to full, and the tip of its missing tentacle reformed itself as the beast gobbled up my spells.
